I often get asked about tips on how to to keep guitars playing well.

Outside of the technical stuff like intonation, new strings, thruss rod adjustments and so forth, I often mention keeping the fretboard well hydrated. As we practice or play live lots of crud, oil and general dirt sits around the fret area. Every so often (or, at every string change) I recommend cleaning all that stuff out with products such as lemon oil or Hydrate fretboard conditioner that Planet Waves makes. They all work in similar ways.

Although it is obvious, we often forget that the fretboard is made of wood and that too needs to be definitely condtioned with oils - so it does not dry out.

Putting some fretboard hydrator or lemon oil all over the neck will help you condition the wood and clean the dirt around the frets. You don't need to drench it. Use a microfiber cloth clean and wipe it all out, so you are left with a nice clean non sticky surface. Don't want to use the 'fancy' stuff? No problem. Good olive oil will also do the trick.

As a quick tip right here, furniture polish such as Pledge cleans guitar's body nicely and it is easily available. You can also use a quick detailer that you can buy for your car. Some are not expensive and one bottle lasts a super long time. Since the guitar's paint process is extremely similar to painting a car - you are good to go.

Microfiber is a perfect cleaning tool for all of this as it holds all the dust and dirt it pickes up in the tiny loops within the cloth. Paper towers are a waste of time and will additionally scratch your guitar. The thicker the microfiber the better the result, but even a basic cloth from K Mart will do the job for you. I also can almost guarantee that you will enjoy playing your guitar more. Hope it helps.
